DEVON AND CORNWALL LONGWOOL PRESS RELEASE – FEB 2018

Rare Opportunity to Acquire a Ready Made Flock of Devon and Cornwall Longwool Sheep

What a wonderful opportunity will be available at Exeter Livestock Market on Friday 9th February. A flock of 52 Devon and Cornwall Longwool in-lamb ewes and two rams will be being auctioned off. Jim and Marian Candy established their flock of Longwools in 2007, when they bought 9 pedigree ewes under the guidance of James Moon, who was one of the great Devon and Cornwall Longwool breeders of his generation.

The Devon and Cornwall Longwool sheep is a very traditional West Country sheep, it is a dual purpose animal suitable for all farming systems, including smallholders. These sheep are as easy grazer, they thrive on grass and roots, and also produce a very heavy fleece of good quality wool. They produce a fantastic carcass and the meat tastes like lamb and hogget used to taste. The Devon and Cornwall Longwool Flockbook Association celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2017 and is going from strength to strength.

This pedigree flock, the Trerieve flock, has been reared on the cliffs overlooking Looe Bay, Cornwall, with the SW Coast Path going through the farm, the sheep are used to the public, docile and easy to handle. The farm is in Higher Level Stewardship, with the ewes grazing the species rich grassland, on a grass based system with little concentrates fed. The flock is certified for Farm Assurance by the Soil Association.

Of the 52 ewes available, the 17 shearling ewes are fully organic, and the rest of the ewes are carrying organic lambs. Scanning results indicate that 21 are carrying singles and 31 carrying doubles. Lambing is due to start from March 9th.
